This little piggy went to the movies

“Penelope”
Summit Entertainment
Directed by Mark Palansky
Starring Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, Reese Witherspoon, Peter Dinklage, Catherine O’Hara and Richard E. Grant
Rated PG

2 ½ Stars

Most of the time when Hollywood wants to make an ugly duckling-type movie, they cast a drop-dead gorgeous actress and have her wear eyeglasses and maybe a baggy sweater. So credit the filmmakers behind the new movie “Penelope,” who have gone so far to disfigure their ugly duckling star as to give Christina Ricci the nose of a pig. Now Porky’s proboscis is not enough to make you forget that there’s a total babe hiding behind the porcine nose, but for the sake of the movie, I’ll play along with the conceit.

Hollywood takes a bit of a breather this week, with only one film getting a major release. Of course, if you’re a fan of funnyman Will Ferrell, one film is all you’ll need.

“Semi-Pro”
NewLine Cinema
Directed by Kent Alterman
Starring Will Farrell, Woody Harrelson, Maura Tierney, Andre Benjamin, Will Arnett, Andrew Daily, Andy Richter and Rob Cordrey
Rated R

2 Stars

I’ll admit to being a fan of Will Farrell’s particular brand of doofus humor. I appreciate that the comedian is always willing to humiliate himself in search of a laugh, and the bottom line for me is that, more often than not, Will Farrell does make me laugh. I’m not always proud of my giggles, but I do laugh.

Vantage Point Movie Review Print E-mail

“Vantage Point”
Columbia Films
Directed by Pete Travis
Starring Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Sigourney Weaver, Forest Whitaker, William Hurt, Zoe Saldana and Eduardo Noriega
Rated PG-13

2 ½ Stars

“Vantage Point” is a fairly engaging action film that centers on a Presidential assassination and the Secret Service agents tasked with finding bringing the bad guys to justice. The whole story takes about twenty-three minutes to play out, but since less than a thirty minutes does not a movie make, the filmmakers rewind everything and show you the assassination again. This time the attack is seen from a different vantage point (thus the title) and this time we’re meant to see the events just a little bit differently. The difference is supposed to provide new insights and twist the story in a different direction.
