Horton Hears a Who movie review

“Who says you can’t find fun family flicks at the theater?
“Horton Hears a Who”
20th Century Fox Films
Directed by Jimmy Hayword and Steve Martino
Starring Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Carol Burnett, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Isla Fisher and Charles Osgood
Rated G
3 Stars
I suppose that it’s understandable, although a bit sad, that most classic children’s literature would be considered too tame for our current generation of attention deficit disorder-afflicted toddlers used to hyper-kinetic “Power Rangers” and their like. So when adapting Dr. Seuss’ beloved “Horton Hears a Who” for the big screen, the lumbering elephant is deemed boring and quickly replaced by a very agile, and slightly insane character voiced by none other than Jim Carrey.
So to my personal dismay, this new film version bears little resemblance to the “Horton” I imagined in my youth, but the kiddies that filled the theater around me seemed to eat it all up. They are, after all, the target audience here, and personal disappointment aside; I must admit that I quite enjoyed the film as well.

Mastodons and saber-toothed tigers and carnivorous ostrich/dinosaurs, oh my!
“10,000 BC”
Warner Brothers Films
Directed by Roland Emmerich
Starring Steven Strait, Camilla Belle, Cliff Curtis, Mona Hammond, Joel Virget and Affif Ben Badra
Rated PG-13
2 Stars
“10,000 BC” is not a good movie, but does have some good special effects. Let’s face the facts; anytime you’ve got a herd of stampeding wooly mammoths, a gigantic saber-toothed tiger and a flock of carnivorous ostrich/dinosaurs, the truth of the matter is that you don’t really need anything else. Why waste your money hiring big movie stars or even writing a decent screenplay?
The problem is that good special effects are expensive, so the filmmakers are forced to use unimpressive actors to fill in the spaces between the CGI creations. It’s makes for quite a letdown. The saber-toothed tiger that looks cool enough to merit a film of its own is featured in just two scenes! The mammoths show up a bit more frequently, but the sad truth is that “10,000 BC” is actually little more than the story of a human hunter named D’Leh (no relation to Tom) who is forced to travel across the mountains to rescue his woman after she is taken by slave traders.
