"Mama Mia" Movie review

“Mama Mia”
Universal Pictures
Directed by Phyllida Lloyd
Starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski and Amanda Seyfried
Rated PG-13
1 ½ Stars
I enjoy a night of drunken karaoke as much as the next guy, but I’m
smart enough to realize that the fun is directly related to my
participation in the singing and the swilling of beer. How does this
relate to the new movie “Mama Mia?” As many designated drivers can
painfully attest, sitting sober in a theater while watching people
badly massacre old pop tunes is simply not an enjoyable experience.
Not even when the singers are movie stars.

"Journey to Center of Earth" Movie review

This "Journey" is a real rollercoaster ride
"Journey to the Center of the Earth"
Directed by Eric Brevig
Starring Brendan Fraser, Josh Hutcherson and Anita Briem
A lot of films disingenuously claim to be "a thrilling rollercoaster ride." Usually it’s just a bunch of hype, but you can’t charge "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with false advertising; not only is this a fun little rollercoaster of a movie, it actually features a rollercoaster in one of the action sequences. Indeed, a theme park metaphor is particularly apt in describing this movie because it plays like the 3-D attractions you can find over at Sea World. It’s exciting, funny, not too scary and quite short—young kids will absolutely love it.

Three new movies roll into local theatres this week, none of them
expected to be huge blockbusters, but one of them might just be the
coolest film of the summer…
