I’m always heartened when I hear that a movie is having a public sneak peak one week before its official opening. This generally means that the studios are so excited about their film that they are banking on seven days of positive word of mouth to help launch the title. When you see as many films as I see each year, anything that promises a better-than-average cinematic experience is more than enough to pique my interest.

“City of Ember” is a strange little science fiction adventure—an uneasy
mix of young adult action and end of the world doom. On the plus side,
the film’s set design is amazing; creating a totally believable
ramshackle future world for our young heroes to play in, but the film
ultimately fails because of weak characters and some tepid action
sequences. “City of Ember” isn’t exciting enough to be a great thrill
ride, and it’s not deep enough to be an effective science fiction drama.
