Mentors Needed For VISD Student s

IT'S A PROGRAM DESIGNED TO HELP MENTOR -- AND TUTOR STUDENTS IN VISD.BUT TO CONTINUE, THE PROGRAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS.
STARTED BY THE VICTORIA BUSINESS COALITION, THE PLAN IS SIMPLE. GETTING BUSINESS AND EDUCATION WORKING TOGETHER. THE PLAN IS TO BUILD A SOLID FOUNDATION IN EDUCATION, FOR A FUTURE WORKFORCE.
THERE ARE 3 SCHOOL CAMPUSES INVOLVED .
IT'S OFFERED FOR 1ST-3RD GRADE STUDENTS HOPKINS ELEMENTARY.
STUDENTS AT PATTI WELDER MIDDLE SCHOOL
AND THE STROMAN MEMORIAL CAMPUS.
HELP IS AVAILABLE FOR REMEDIAL READING AND MATH
<"What the school does is an academic assessment for the the student. Students in the bottom 25% of class are then eligible for the host program. Students are then enrolled for a number of slots that are available for the schools.">Rhonda Fotaides\Exec. Director, Sure B.E.T.
THE MENTORING IS DONE ON THE SCHOOL CAMPUS, WITH A MASTER TEACHER IN THE LAB ROOM TO ASSIST VOLUNTEERS WITH THE STUDENTS.
SOME BUSINESSES LAST YEAR ALLOWED FOR EMPLOYEES, TO TAKE TIME TO TUTOR AND MENTOR
STUDENTS.
THE UHV JAGUAR WOMEN'S SOFTBALL TEAM STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE TO HELP KIDS WITH MATH AND READING.
SOFT BALL PLAYERS STEPHANIE LAVEY WHO MENTORED AT PATTI WELDER AND BRITTANY FASS, WHO VOLUNTEERED AT THE STROMAN CAMPUS, SAY THAT HELPING STUDENTS HAS BEEN A REWARDING EXPERIENCE.

25% of 3rd graders were mentored at Hopkins Elementary for reading. When it came TAKS Test time, all who had participated in the mentoring program passed that test with flying colors.
ONE OF THOSE MENTORS AT HOPKINS ELEMENTARY WAS HEAD COACH FOR THE WOMENS UHV SOFTBALL TEAM, KARI LAMBETH.
