A lot of homeowners are starting to put screen doors on their homes - and there's a very good reason for this. In great weather, we can open up the front and back door or like a screened in porch. We can let a nice cool breeze come through the house but keep the bugs out. Over time, they can develop some problems - especially if you're utilizing one of these decorative wood screen doors. Because they've got very small rails running across there, a lot of times, because of the weight and the humidity, this side of the door will actually start to sag.

Now as is typical, the non-hinge side is the side that sags. And, on this door in particular, it's caused a couple of problems. Number one, when this door was first installed, this barrel bolt actually lined up with the hole. Now it makes it very difficult to lock and unlock the door and, it's actually starting to rub on the jam.

The first thing we need to do to make sure this door works properly again is raise this side of the door back up. In years past, we've actually used a cable and turn buckle situation to actually pull this end of the door up. This has been a great solution in the past, but I don't particularly care for the looks of it. I think it detracts from the door itself. There's an easier way to do this. We can actually take the bottom hinge loose on the jam side, shim it out using paper or a little bit of wood. That's actually going to bring the bottom of the door over and the top up, making everything line back up again.
Don says wood decorative screen doors are available in hundreds of designs and painted or unfinished. The internet is a great resource for finding unique screen doors. Just plug in "wooden screen doors" to your search engine and watch the possibilities appear.
