NOW FOR OUR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK.  JOHN MARES HAS BEEN AROUND THE ST. JOE FOOTBALL PROGRAM FOR A LONG TIME.
HE FEELS WHAT BRETT STANFORD DID LAST WEEK MEASURES UP AS ONE OF THE BEST RUSHING PERFORMANCES HE'S EVER SEEN AS A FLYER.
IN THE WIN OVER SCHULENBURG, STANFORD RAN FOR 306 YARDS AND FOUR TD'S, ONE OF THEM FOR 78 YARDS.
"I thought I was at maybe 200, that's what I was thinking", said Stanford. "I had no idea it was 306.  When they told you after the game, your reaction was what?  I thought it was 200, that's what I was hoping for.  It was a little overwhelming.  How much do you think you've improved in just the first two games?  I'm starting to see the holes a lot better now.  I'm starting to get used to playing running back. I'm just starting to get used to it a lot."
"Where does this rank among the best rushing games that you've seen since you've been here?  It's up there because we were playing a real good football team", said Mares.  "Sometimes we get some rushes against some teams that aren't very good, but this is a good football team we played.  He got after it.  How much has he come along as a running back?  Last year he was a backup and when we put him in he did a good job for us. He's come a long way for us, but this is a young man who worked all summer, every day, did his running, and he's ready to play ball.  Going into this year, the line was inexperienced.  How much have they grown up in the first two games?  They've matured a lot.  They're starting to hit their blocks now.  They're starting to get there.  We're really starting to pull together.  This week the Athlete of the Week trophy goes to St. Joseph High School in the name of Brett Stanford.  Here you are, Brett, and congratulations to you.  Thank you, I appreciate it.  I just want to say thank you to all the fans and my coaches and all the support I've had and I hope we can win this next game."
THE FLYERS HOST THE INDUSTRIAL COBRAS AT PATTI WELDER STADIUM FRIDAY NIGHT.
