AFTER OPENING WITH A HOME LOSS TO STATE-RANKED CARROLL, THE VIPER GIRLS HAD WON TWO STRAIGHT IN DISTRICT BASKETBALL. THEY WENT FOR A THIRD STRAIGHT AT HOME WEDNESDAY NIGHT. THE VIPER GIRLS STARTED 2008 AGAINST RAY. FIRST QUARTER ACTION, KAEYLNN REYES FROM THE FREE THROW LINE FOR TWO. KRYSTA MARTINEZ GETS THE LOOSE BALL, TAKES IT TO THE OTHER END, GETS TWO OF HER 11 POINTS. THE GAME WAS TIED AT THE HALF, BUT THE TEXANS OUTSCORED THE VIPERS BY NINE IN THE THIRD. REYES WITH FIVE THREE'S, 19 POINTS, BUT RAY TOOK THE 51-40 WIN. SIX FOR BRIEMONE SMITH. THE VIPERS NOW 2-2 IN DISTRICT, 14-9 FOR THE SEASON. AFTER THE GAME, I TALKED WITH THE VIPER GIRLS. In the second half, they picked up the intensity and we didn't", said Sandra Jimenez, Viper Girls Basketball Head Coach. "We just did the things that we talked about not doing. We didn't block out, we took one shot and that's all we had, then we were down on the other end playing defense." "When we came back third quarter we weren't ready to play after the halftime, so we let them get ahead", said Krysta Martinez, who had 11 points. "We kept coming back but we let them get farther ahead. That's what did it for us. You have to play four quarters and we played two. You just can't beat a team like Ray playing two quarters."
THE VIPER GIRLS CONTINUE DISTRICT PLAY AT SAN ANTONIO EAST CENTRAL SATURDAY AFTERNOON.
