For both homeowners and renters, there are some things you can do to reduce consumption. First of all, add a digital programmable thermostat. Set the thermostat lower when the house is empty while you're away at work or at night when you're sleeping. In the winter months, it's best to set your thermostat to 68 degrees or lower. Use a programmable thermostat with its heating system to automatically lower the temperature at night or when no one is home. By turning your thermostat back 10-15 degrees for eight hours, a homeowner can save about 5 to 15 percent on heating bills.

Weather-strip and caulk around windows and doors to prevent drafts. A gap of just one-quarter inch can let in as much air as a softball-size hole.

Use your ceiling fans! Ceiling fans can keep you comfortable in the winter too! Reversing the direction of the blades pushes warm air down in to the room.

Replace your current incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which use 70 percent less energy than a standard incandescent bulb and last up to 10 times longer. Turn off unused lights and electronics when you leave a room.

If you're building a new home or planning a major remodeling project, it's a great time to upgrade to more energy-efficient products. Serious reduction in consumption requires some up front investment.

That includes a well-insulated house that addresses air leakage - like a spray foam insulation that acts as an air-barrier.

When choosing windows and appliances, make sure you select those with the ENERGYSTAR label. The ENERGY STAR rating can be found on the most energy efficient products, including appliances, office equipment, lighting, home electronics and windows and doors.

Energy-efficient homes cost less to heat and cool. Energy related improvements will provide immediate dollars on a monthly basis in terms of lower utility bills. Investments in energy-efficient upgrades not only can save you money now, it will add value to your home in the future.

Follow my advice! You'll save money - and help save the environment while doing it!
