Vocational Training in Cuero

THE BUSINESSES IN CUERO ARE IN NEED OF TRAINED WORKERS, MANY RESIDENTS ARE NOT SKILLED IN VOCATIONAL WORK, BUT COULD BE AND WITH SUCH A SKILL COMES A MUCH BETTER PAYCHECK. WHAT MOTIVATION DO THESE CHILDREN HAVE. SOME WILL GO OFF TO COLLEGE, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE ONES THAT DON'T... EVEN IF THEY GRADUATE, THE STUDENTS OBTAIN BOOK KNOWLEDGE BUT DOES THAT HELP THEM GET A SKILL REQUIRED JOB.
"The ones that don't go to college aren't really trained for anything and the local business people see these kids and they have advertisements. They're not coming to work, they're not trained for work, says Henry Lind, Cuero School Superintendent.
FOR EXAMPLE, HERE AT THE CUERO GMC DEALERSHIP... PAUL HOLCOMB SEARCHED FOR CERTIFIED TECHNICIANS, TO FILL A JOB THAT COULD PAY 50-60 THOUSAND DOLLARS A YEAR.
"I ran an ad for three consecutive weeks and had two responses. Did you hire anyone?...no...Weren't qualified," says Paul Holcomb, GMC Dealership Partner.
WITH CUERO BEING A RURAL COMMUNITY, MANY RESIDENTS HAVE TO TRAVEL OUT OF TOWN FOR GOOD PAYING JOBS AND NOW ARE MOVING CLOSER TO WORK.
COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND BUSINESSES SPOKE UP ABOUT THEIR CONCERNS AND PROGRESS IS BEING MADE.
Cuero High School has just few of the essential tools that students need to learn some of these vocational studies and students are already learning some of them. However, now they have a chance to become certified.CUERO ISD AND ASSOCIATED BUSINESS AND CONTRACTORS ARE PARTNERING UP TO PROVIDE VOCATIONAL TRAINING TO STUDENTS ALLOWING THEM TO NOT ONLY GET THE SKILLS BUT SHOW PROOF THAT THEY ARE QUALIFIED FOR VOCATIONAL JOBS.
"The certification process guarantees the employer that they have met certain requirements and levels," says Michael Cavanaugh, Principal of Cuero High School.
BEGINNING THE 2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR PROGRAMS FOR BUILDING TRADES AND WELDING CERTIFICATION CLASSES WILL BEGIN. AND TALK OF ELECTRICIAN AND PLUMBING ARE IN THE FUTURE AS WELL.
BUT MOST OF ALL STUDENTS ARE SEEING THE BENEFITS OF LEARNING A TRADE.
"I think it would be important for people to have a welding certificated because you'll be more well rounded, put it on your resume and make more money," says Danielle Ideus, Cuero Sophmore.
