New Movies for the March 21 weekend
Written by Sean McBride
Thursday, 20 March 2008
Three new movies come hopping in to town, just in time for the Easter
weekend. Of course, none of the films have anything to do with the holiday, but
happy Easter anyway, folks…
“Drillbit Taylor” is the story of three high school nerds
who hire a guy to protect them from school bullies. Owen Wilson plays the guy,
a loner con-man hoping to score some quick cash. But he doesn’t count on
striking up a friendship with his three geeky protectees.
“Drillbit Taylor” is a hit and miss and miss comedy.
Lightweight and breezy, and it’s nice to see Owen Wilson back on the big
screen, but nobody’s going to mistake this for anything other than a
mediocre retread of “My Bodyguard.”
In Tyler Perry’s “Meet the Brown’s” Angela
Bassett plays a single mom who goes to Georgia for the funeral of her father—a man she’s
never met. She’s also never met the Browns, dad’s crass but
fun-loving family who might drive her crazy, but just might offer her a new
lease on life as well.
And finally, “Shutter,” for those of you who wish that
every holiday was Halloween.
Joshua Jackson plays an American photographer who goes to Japan for a fashion job, where he appears to accidentally
kill a young woman while driving late one night. Now the woman’s ghost is
popping up in all of his pictures, and the photographer’s wife thinks
that the ghost may be looking for a little revenge.
So, nothing special at the movies this week, but lots of great stuff on
home DVD, including the Oscar-nominated best picture “Atonement,” the
enchanting family film, “Enchanted,” and a very good sci fi action
flick from Will Smith, “I Am Legend.”
And that’s what’s new in theaters this week,
I’m Sean
McBride the movie
guy for Newscenter 25.
