THE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK THIS WEEK IS THE SECOND STRAIGHT VIPER TO WIN THE DISTRICT BOYS SINGLES TENNIS TITLE. LAST YEAR, IT WAS COLIN HOOVER.
HE WENT ON TO WIN STATE LAST MAY, WHEN JAN VAREJCKO WAS STILL IN HIS NATIVE COUNTRY, THE CZECH REPUBLIC. OVER THE WEEKEND, VAREJCKO WON THE 27-5A TITLE, 7-5, 6-2, OVER ANDREW MANGO OF CARROLL.
"Yeah of course I'm happy, but it's not the end of the way", said Varejcko. "I'm heading to Regionals, so hopefully I'll do good in Regionals. What were the keys to your success down there? My keys were my head, my service and my backhand. I have a good mental condition."
"I'm not surprised", said tennis head coach Whitney Russell. "He's been very dedicated, out here at practice every day giving 100 percent, so he deserves it, definitely. How much have you improved? I feel I'm on the same level. I won't improve. How is your adjustment to America and South Texas going? It's the same. I love American people, especially from Texas. They are friendly so I don't have any problems with them. How confident do you feel he could make it to State? He's definitely going to State. He'll have a lot of competition at Regionals, but he can get through them. I can do it. I trust myself. I have more experience than these guys, so I can do it."
