MONDAY NIGHT WAS THE CUERO HIGH SCHOOL ALL-SPORTS AWARDS BANQUET, AND THE GOBBLERS HAD EVEN MORE TO CELEBRATE AFTER THEIR LATEST SUCCESS IN AUSTIN AT THE STATE MEET. OUR CHASE GALLIMORE REPORTS FROM THE GOBBLER CAPITOL OF THE WORLD.
AT CUERO HIGH SCHOOL AN ELABORATE SIGN TELLS THE STORY OF A RICH ATHLETIC TRADITION THAT GOT A LITTLE RICHER OVER THE WEEKEND. FROM THE STATE MEET IN AUSTIN, THE MEAN GREEN TRACK TEAM TOOK HOME ANOTHER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
"Everybody went crazy", said Brent Johnson, who won three State medals. "Everybody was proud of us. We had so many injuries this year. People really didn't think we had it in us to win. We did it. We overcame." "Everybody was sitting there like ya'll won state", said Isaiah Glover, who won two State golds. "I didn't know what to do. I was shocked. I'm still shocked." "I was very excited", said Desmond Patton, who took fourth in discus. "Having the team go to state. It was fun because I got to participate." ANOTHER TROPHY ON A FULL SHELF MEANS THERE'S SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT CUERO ATHLETICS.
"A sign spray painted on the fence of the practice field personifies what Cuero track and field is all about. It simply states, we never settle for less." "We always have one goal", said head coach Victor Mathis. "To win the state championship. If its football, if its track, or baseball or whatever. Most teams look at winning district or just winning regionals. Our kids stay focused because they have brothers or cousins and friends that have made it to state. thats our first goal."
FOR THE GOBBLERS, A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE HAS LED TO A THIRD STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE PAST 4 YEARS. AND THAT SUCCESS IS A SIGN OF HARD WORK.
"We all go out to practice ready to work hard", said Amand Avery-Green, winner of two State golds. "Sometimes we don't feel like it. But, whenever we know something big is about to happen, we'll work hard at practice." "We come out to practice and work hard", said double State gold medalist Stefon Hargrove. "Sometimes we might play around. But, whenever its time to get down to business, we get down to business and work hard."
ANOTHER LOOK AT THE CUERO SIGN SHOWS PLENTY OF ROOM FOR MORE CHAMPIONSHIPS. PERHAPS A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME. FROM THE GOBBLER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, I'M CHASE GALLIMORE, NEWSCENTER 25 SPORTS.
