New Movies for the May 31st Weekend
Written by Sean McBride
Friday, 30 May 2008
So far, summer 2008 is seen a lot of guy-friendly movies. But this weekend, it’s all about the ladies: Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, Samantha, and all the fans of “Sex and the City.”
Now I count myself among those fans who thought that "Sex and the City" ended its H B O run far too abruptly. So it’s nice to see a fitting coda to the series in the form of a big screen movie.
I can’t talk about the plot without giving away spoilers, suffice it to say that “Sex and the City” features plenty of insider nods for the fans, and the story is heady with girl power and high fashion. It’s cute, but not as cutting edge as it seemed when it was playing on TV.
The problem is that there’s very little reason for non-fans to check out the movie. The characters are only accessible if you know their backstory from TV. So it’s a must see for fans, a pass for the rest of you.
Also out, “The Strangers” stars Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a young couple being stalked by a creepy trio of masked thugs. Think faceless killers, a photogenic stars and lots of minor thrills.
Home DVD is mostly miss this week. The best of the bunch finds John Cusack in “Grace is Gone.” It’s the story of a father trying to find a way to tell his daughters that their mother was killed in Iraq.
And that’s what’s new in theaters this week, I’m Sean McBride the movie guy for Newscenter 25.
