The Mediterranean diet – the cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea – incorporates the basics of healthy eating, plus a splash of flavorful olive oil and perhaps a glass of good red wine.  And while most diets include fruits and vegetables, subtle variations or differences in portions may make a difference in your risk of heart disease.

Key components of the Mediterranean diet include:
  • Eating generous amounts of fruits and vegetables
  • Consuming healthy fats such as olive and canola oil.
  • Eating small portions of nuts.
  • Consuming very little meat.
  • Eating fish on a regular basis.

Please make plans to attend the HealthWISE event, “A Healthy Heart and Mediterranean Cooking” at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 9, 2008 at Citizens HealthPlex.  Cardiologist Dr. William Campbell, Jr., M.D. will present information on the benefits of a Mediterranean diet and the impact on your heart.  Chef Scott McHaney will prepare appetizers, soups, and entrees based upon the fundamentals of Mediterranean cooking.  The cost of the event is $35 per person.  Space is limited so please call 578-WISE  (578-9473) to reserve your seat today.
