New Movies for the July 11th Weekend
Written by Sean McBride
Saturday, 12 July 2008
Three new movies roll into local theatres this week, none of them expected to be huge blockbusters, but one of them might just be the coolest film of the summer…
“Hellboy 2: The Golden Army” is the continuing story of the lovable lunk of a demon-hero who works for the U S Government fighting paranormal threats. This adventure finds him facing off against an Elvin Prince who wants to take control over an unstoppable robot army and thus sweep humanity from the face of the earth.
“Hellboy 2” is filled with pulse-pounding cartoon action, and lots of great monster special effects. Indeed, one trip through an underground Troll Marketplace is already being called the “Star Wars” Cantina Scene for a new generation.
I’m just as impressed with the acting here, in fact, despite the great visual look of the film, my favorite scene turns out to be the comedic gem where Hellboy and best friend Abe Sapien drunkenly massacre some bad Barry Manilow tunes. Great stuff all around.
More great stuff in the form of “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” Brendan Frasier plays an explorer who accidentally ends up in, you guessed it, the center of the earth. Turns out that the center is filled with all sorts of dangerous plants and creatures, which makes for a fun, PG-flavored adventure that should thrill the young ones.
Finally, “Meet Dave” is the story of a group of miniature aliens who land on earth in a spaceship that’s designed to look and act just like Eddie Murphy. The problem is that the spaceship falls in love with a human woman, leading to all sorts of miniature comic hi-jinks.
Not much of note on home DVD this week, although “Stop-Loss” is a terrific drama about US Soldiers struggling between patriotism and the feeling that the military is treating them unfairly.
And that’s what’s new in theaters this week, I’m Sean McBride the movie guy for Newscenter 25.
