WHILE SEVERAL BANKS ON A NATIONAL LEVEL ARE STRUGGLING, LOCAL RESIDENTS ARE ASKING THE QUESTION,  IS MY MONEY SAFE IN THE BANK?

"That is a scary thought, because I may not have a lot of money in the bank, but what I have is all I have and to know that one day you go to the bank and you know it's closed.  Your money, you cant's get to it,"says Rosa Rodriguez, Victoria Resident.

"I would be worried, we get paid once a month and I get direct deposit, so I count on that check and if I cone here and there is no money.  I am up a creek without a paddle," says Maria Garcia, Victoria Resident.

AND SOME RESIDENTS ARE WORRIED THAT IF THERE'S TROUBLE ON A NATIONAL LEVEL THE FINANCIAL PAIN WILL BE FELT EVERYWHERE.

"If some of your largest banks start collapsing it will effect everybody, not just Victoria.  It's going to affect us all," says Birgit Neitich, Victoria Resident.

MANY RESIDENTS ARE AFRAID THAT ONE DAY THEY WILL GO TO A BANK AND NOT HAVE THE MONEY.  BUT LOCAL  BANKS HERE IN VICTORIA ARE SAYING " THERE'S NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT."

I SPOKE WITH THE PRESIDENT OF FIRST VICTORIA BANK WHO SAYS, WHEN PEOPLE HEAR THAT A BANK IS IN TROUBLE, YOU NEED TO KNOW THAT BANKING IS A GENERIC TERM....AND COMMUNITY BANKS IN TEXAS ARE DOING FINE.

"There are a lot of ways to interpret banks, investment, like calstern, indimac which is a mortgage bank is called a bank.  But really community banks like First Victoria and others are what I call Main Street banks- when you look at anyone of the main street community banks you'll find that there are very few problems that the public should be concerned about," says CEO Russel Marshall, Victoria Bank President.

SO, THEN I GOT A SECOND OPINION AND SPOKE THE PRESIDENT OF TRUST TEXAS BANK - OUT OF CUERO. HE SAYS  MOST TEXAS BANKS ARE DOING OKAY.  HE SAYS BANKING HERE IS TEXAS IS GENERALLY MORE CONSERVATIVE.

<most of us around this part of texas did not get off into the subprime lending and all those financial gimmics.  We stuck to the basic under writing of our loans and most of us have excellent assett quality.  Look at the FDIC report one will see that community banks are the strongest of the banking industry," says CEO Bill Howard,Trust Texas Bank President.

AND YOU CAN VISIT THE FEDERAL DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORPORATION OR BETTER KNOWN AS THE FDIC'S WEBSITE AT www.fdic.gov.

REPORTS ARE PUBLIC INFORMATION AND A GREAT WAY TO CHECK THE STATUS OF YOUR BANK.  YOU CAN DETERMIN HOW YOUR FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS IS PERFORMING BY LOOKING AT IT'S CAPITAL ASSETS. BANKS WILL ALSO PROVIDE THAT INFORMATION TO YOU UPON REQUEST.
