Galveston Still Not Safe Print E-mail

The commissioner says it could take up to two months for conditions to improve to the point where they are safe. There is no electricity to keep food that help ward off food borne illnesses.

"So when you couple that lack of a health infrastructure here right now with lack of sanitation, water, electricity, etcetera - and lack of medical care on the island, it's my opinion as Commissioner of Health of Texas that individuals should not be living on the island at this time," says Dr. David Lakey, Texas Commissioner of Health.


Officials say Galveston residents should think of finding temporary housing for a few months.
