It started out as a rescue operation that soon turned into a body recovery effort. Three men were working inside a grain silo at the Vic-Cal grain elevator facility in Placedo when one of the workers fell into the grain. He quickly sank. Victoria firefighters and rescue workers tried to reach the man from the top of the silo, but as they shoveled the grain away from the victim, the grain would spill right back in. Rescue workers then opened the bottom of the silo and shoveled the grain out to lower the level. After several hours, the effort worked, but it was too late. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. It took more than five hours to complete the rescue and recovery operation.
