OUR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WAS SICK TO HIS STOMACH JUST MOMENTS BEFORE KICKOFF LAST FRIDAY NIGHT. DURING THE GAME, AS OUR ROSS KINNAIRD, THIS ST. JOE FLYER MADE THE OPPOSING TEAM A BIT QUEASY. ST. JOE'S HAD NO PROBLEM WITH THE GROUND GAME IN FRIDAY'S WIN OVER CORPUS CHRISTI JOHN PAUL THE SECOND. THE FLYERS ROLLED UP 307 YARDS AND ABOUT HALF THAT LARGE TOTAL CAME FROM ITS SMALLEST PLAYER. SENIOR RYAN VALDEZ ONLY CARRIED THE ROCK 4 TIMES ALL GAME, BUT HE MADE THEM ALL COUNT. VALDEZ HAD TOUCHDOWN RUNS OF 75 AND 77 YARDS. VALDEZ FINISHED THE NIGHT WITH 163 YARDS RUSHING, HELPING CARRY ST. JOE'S TO VICTORY ON THE SHOULDERS OF ITS TINIEST ATHLETE. "It was great", said Valdez. "I'd like to thank my line for that. Without them I wouldn't have been able to score that touchdown." "It's always great", said head coach John Mares. "He came off the bench and we knew he had the speed. He put the speed with a few moves together and he got some good runs. It was wonderful. I thought it was a dream at first and I was just ready to wake up, but it wasn't. Every day he comes out to practice he goes against the first team defense and every day he's gotten better. I'm progressing as the days go by. Hopefully there'll be more touchdowns to come if my line continues to do greatness as they are right now."
WITH OUR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK, I'M ROSS KINNAIRD, NEWSCENTER 25 SPORTS.
THE FLYERS TAKE ON DANBURY AT PATTI WELDER STADIUM FRIDAY NIGHT AT 7:30.
I PLAN TO BE THERE FOR THAT GAME, AND WE'LL HAVE LOADS MORE ON FRIDAY FOOTBALL FEVER, 10:20 FRIDAY NIGHT.
