UHV Enrollment Increases

UHV STARTED WITH ONLY 100 STUDENTS IN 1973. ADMINISTRATORS SAY ENROLLMENT AT UHV HAS EXCEEDED SEVERAL MILESTONES IN A RELATIVELY SHORT SPAN OF TIME.
THE UNIVERSITY FIRST PASSED THE 2,500 MARK AND NOW THE 3,000 MARK SINCE PRESIDENT HUDSON'S ARRIVAL IN 2004.
UHV PROVOST, SUZANNE LABREQUE, SAYS A NUMBER OF FACTORS PLAY A PART IN THIS INCREASE.
ONE FACTOR IS THE ECONOMY---SHE SAYS MORE PEOPLE START GOING TO SCHOOL WHEN THE ECONOMY IS LOOKING DOWN.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ARE ALSO HELPING IN ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY, AND THE UHV BUISNESS SCHOOL EVEN PLAYS A PART.
THERE ARE TWO ADDITIONAL FACTORS, HOWEVER, THAT PLAY A LARGER PART IN THE ENROLLMENT INCREASE.
"We are offering a lot of classes online most of our students have at least one online class, which makes it very convenient for them to take it. Uh, they can study after working hours, not leave their home. Our faculty are very connected. They're committed 24/7 I think, and that has certainly made a difference in our enrollment,"says LaBreque.
"In speaking with students on campus, many say they believe college enrollment is increasing everywhere because more and more people are realizing how important getting a college education really is."
"It's very obvious, especially in this town. You're not making any money, you're not being able to do any extra things or afford things, or hardly even afford your own house if you don't get an education. It's not gonna happen, says student, Felecia Vela.
AND MICHELLE RYBA--FEELS THE SAME WAY--BUT WITH A DIFFERENT FORM OF MOTIVATION.
"Well, nobody in my family has a college education. Nobody's ever gone to college so I wanted to be the first and set an example for my brothers," says Ryba.
ERIN LITVIK DECIDED TO ATTEND UHV BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO PLAY SOFTBALL AND BE CLOSER TO HOME. LITVIK BELIEVES WITHOUT A COLLEGE EDUCATION---A PERSON MIGHT FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO GET ANY KIND OF SUBSTANTIAL JOB.
"you just have to do it these days, there's no way around getting an education," says Litvik.
