First, there was Star Trek, now, Safe Trek? Well, that’s the theme of this year’s fire safety show at the community center. The show uses skits, songs and antics to teach children about fire safety and prevention along with general safety topics like buckling your seatbelt. Classic science fiction characters were on hand, but in fire safety format-Darth Vance, the Star Ship No Surprise and R2 Medic 2 all helped to create a fun learning atmosphere for the kids. The Victoria Fire Department teams up with several agencies and businesses, including The Civilian Fire Academy Alumni Association, school districts and Victoria County Volunteer Fire Firefighters to bring kids in from as far away as Westhoff and Industrial for the shows. Victoria Fire Chief Vance Riley says instilling safe practices in kids while young increase the chance they’ll remember them when they’re older.

“Well, unfortunately, we still have many fires, we still have people dying in omotor vehicle accidents because they’re not wearing their safety belts. There’s all kinds of things like that, that if we teach them when they’re young, they’re gonna remember them as adults. I know when I was growing up we didn’t have anyone teaching us those things, so we try to start the young children and let them learn in a fun way. May they’ll remember as they grow older.”

Riley also says the shows bring in thousands of kids from Victoria and surrounding areas and its all part of Fire Prevention Month.
