IN THEIR VERY FIRST SEASON, THE UHV BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL TEAMS BECAME THE TALK OF THE TOWN IN THE WINTER AND SPRING OF '08. THE BASEBALL TEAM PUT UP PINBALL SIZED NUMBERS ON THE SCOREBOARD, AND BIG NUMBERS IN THE RIVERSIDE STADIUM STANDS. THE SOFTBALL TEAM BEAT THE NAIA DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPS, GOT RANKED IN THE NAIA NATIONAL POLL, AND MADE THE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT IN FARMER'S BRANCH. THE SUCCESS OF THESE TEAMS SPURRED WHAT UHV CALLS ITS POSSIBLE DOWNWARD EXPANSION, IN OTHER WORDS TURNING UHV INTO A FOUR-YEAR UNIVERSITY. NOW, IN LESS THAN A YEAR, UHV WILL HAVE TWO MORE TEAMS PLAYING SPORTS.
UHV PRESIDENT TIM HUDSON OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED TUESDAY THAT THEY ARE ADDING MENS' AND WOMEN'S GOLF TEAMS THAT WILL START PLAY NEXT FALL. ALSO UHV WILL HAVE MENS' AND WOMENS' SOCCER TEAMS THAT WILL BEGIN PLAY IN 2010.
[CG :2 Line\Ashley Walyuchow\UHV Athletic Director]"The timing is right given our downward expansion and obviously the momentum helps in launching new sports, but I don't think it was inherent on doing what we're doing", said athletic director Ashley Walyuchow.
"We're learning as we go and we have good momentum", said Hudson. "Getting the baseball and softball seasons under our belts was very important. We learned a lot. We have a commitment to this whole process because we have a commitment to our students and to this community to bring in student-athletes from outside the community. We're moving forward rapidly because we're confident we can get this done." UHV SOCCER WILL BE PLAYED AT THE ST. JOE FIELD OF DREAMS. VICTORIA AND COLONY CREEK COUNTRY CLUBS HAVE OFFERED THE USE OF THEIR COURSES FOR JAGUAR GOLF.
