VIPER BOYS HEAD BASKETBALL COACH JOHN GRAMMER IS ABOUT TO START HIS 11TH SEASON OF COACHING VISD HOOPS. HE MAY BE COACHING ONE OF THE MOST INEXPERIENCED TEAMS HE'S EVER HAD.
12 SENIORS GRADUATED FROM THE TEAM THAT REACHED ROUND TWO OF THE PLAYOFFS LAST WINTER.
COACH GRAMMER LIKES THE TERM RELOAD OVER REBUILD. IN THE TWO SCRIMMAGES, BOTH LOSSES, HIS TEAM HAS HAD SOME GROWING PAINS.
"We knew going in that we had a lot of inexperience and it showed the first couple of scrimmages, but there was a significant improvement from the first to the second scrimmage", said Grammer. "That's encouraging. We're also waiting to get all our guys. We have some out with grade problems and injuries, so that's another thing we're waiting on, but I'm optimistic. They've been real coachable, good to work with, and in time you'll see us make a lot of improvement. They know that they're at a disadvantage with a lack of experience. I've talked to them many times that this will be different, and they're listening but they just don't understand because they haven't experienced it. They've had two scrimmages to show them they will have to pick it up."
THE VIPER BOYS START THEIR HOOPS SEASON TUESDAY NIGHT AT 7:30 AT SAN ANTONIO CORNERSTONE.
