Those Fires Were So Intense; It Took Five Other Departments To Contain The Blaze.

The first call came just after 11am on Monday, that reported that a fire had started near the roadway on  state 185 between Long Mott and Sea Drift.

Shortly there after 3 other calls were made of other grass fires not far from the first reported, alongside the roadway.

As the fire was spreading, it caught over 60 bales of hay on fire in the area.

"The big factor was the number of round bales of hay. It was extremely difficult to put it out. And plus we had a high wind coming out of the south, which hampered us. Cause the first priority was to put the pastures out, because we had fire spreading across one of the pastures."> Says Chief Peter DeForest, of the Seadrift Volunteer Fire Department

The fires quickly got out of control and back up was called to help. The Port Lavaca Fire Department responded as well as several other Volunteer Departments from Port O'Connor, Magnolia Beach, 6 Mile and Port Alto Olivia Volunteer Fire Departments.

"When you're a fire fighter and you go to these grass fires, you understand how dry it is. Without having any rain, these fires can get out control." Says Seadrift Volunteer Firefighter Steve Obriant.

The 6 fire departments battled these 4 grass fires for just about 5 hours, until they were under control.

Some of the hay bales are still smoldering from a fire that was spreading quickly.

But the cause of this fire is yet to be determined.

"Because we don't have any reliable eyewitnesses, we don't know what caused it. It could have been a number of factors. The fires were along side the road, so it could have been anything. I don't want to speculate, but it could have been any number of items."> Says Peter DeForest
