Christmas has arrived early for the San Antonio River Authority and the residence of Goliad. A lady by the name of Elizabeth Branch, donated this property to SARA in honor of her late husband David's family. Obtaining this land will allow SARA to further its initiative of creating increased outdoor recreational space along the San Antonio River, as is outlined in the San Antonio River Basin Plan for Nature-Based Park Resources.

The San Antonio River Authority gets a welcoming head start to the holiday season.

Early November brought good cheer to the organization, when a generous donor furnished them with 4.2 acres of land at no cost.

Located in Goliad, one block from the city's Courthouse Square and along the San Antonio River, the property offers up additional opportunities for nature-based resources.

"As we work with SARA to develop the property, there will be some unique things that we can do," says Wilfred Korth, Canoe Trail Goliad Sites Committee Chair and Chair of the Greater Goliad Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee.

Korth, who wears many hats throughout the Goliad outdoor community, says the greater Goliad Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is one of several organizations stepping up to the plate to assist SARA in pin pointing the needs of the Goliad community.

According to SARA, the property remains largely undeveloped at this time. However, with its central location near the Goliad Courthouse Square, Goliad Paddling Trail and Angel of Goliad Hike and Bike Trail, there are many possibilities for its future use.

"We look at this property again as being to add to the quality of life in Goliad," says Korth.

Educational purposes or a kayak and canoe rental business are just a few of the ideas that have been kicked around. SARA will welcome input from the community on the properties development during public meetings scheduled in 2010.
