More Families Seeking Assistance

St. Vincent de Paul Society is seeing an increase in the number of families needing assistance.

The line is a key indicator that several families in the area need assistance.

"It looks like today (Tuesday) we've helped at least 50 families, there's a tremendous need, people are hurting." OLV Parishioner Bob Coffey said.

But this line, hasn't always been this long.

"Up until the last month or two, maybe ten families a week. The last three or four weeks volume went up. We served well over 50 families in one week with food alone." Coffey said.

"It helps me out with my food, when you're low on food and can't afford it, they help you out and with diapers and everything you need to get by. It's really hard to get by in this town." Casmira McElveen said.

"It helps when I don't have the money to get it, like diapers and stuff, they help me with it." Amy murphy said.

"I got let go from my job and finances are really tight and this place helps you out, diapers, shampoos, razors, food, financially if they can, if they have the funds." Eric Garza said.

As of now, they don't have the funds. Just last week ten families needed financial assistance and the organization helped to pay utilities and rent for those families.

St. Vincent de Paul relies on monetary donations to help assist with bills and the SVDP is a client of the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent.

The assistance building is located on the corner of Mesquite and Azalea here in Victoria. They offer assistance every Tuesday night from 5 to 7 pm. If you'd like more information on the program or to see if you qualify you can contact Our Lady of Victory Church at 575-4741.
